The Rising Need for Personal Safety Training Seminars

September 30, 2007

When I was a little girl, I lived at a Lake.  My Dad said we lived in “Heaven”.  Mountains surrounded the Lake. Lakefront homes dotted the hillsides on opposite sides of the Lake, with boatdocks connecting the homes to the water.

I had a glorious childhood.

Summers were pure freedom.

My days were spent playing outside and roaming anywhere I wanted to go.  I waded in the shallow shore waters and played with the minnows and squished my toes in the mud.  I swam in the deep waters by myself or with other children who lived at the Lake.  We sailed our boats.  I explored the mountains and came home in time for lunch and dinner.  My friend and I played board games outside until it was too dark to see what we were doing.  “Barbie” was my favorite board game.

I didn’t worry about my safety.

My parents didn’t worry about my safety.

I just had fun………..

I asked my Dad what he did as a child.  My Dad is almost 90 years old.  He said he rode his bike everywhere and anywhere all day long.

He didn’t worry about his safety.

His parents didn’t worry about his safety either.

Yesterday I bought walkie-talkies for my children so I can talk to them while they are riding their bikes throughout our neighborhood.  I want to know where they are.  This is a relatively inexpensive  experiment and hopefully these two-way radios won’t get dropped and broken before the week is out.  If this works out, I may bite the bullet and buy them walkie talkie wrist watches, which also show the time, and would be much harder to drop and break.

Over the past several years, I have been speaking to audiences of all ages about their personal safety.  Five Star Seminars has been marvelous about booking our Colorado Safety Educators’ public awareness safety campaign seminars all over Colorado.

We have a great concern for the safety of children.  As a safety speaker and trainer, I hope that I am getting through to my audiences that learning self-defense strategies is critical.

Learning Self-defense strategies is a NOW Thing!

George W. Bush, President of the United States of America, proclaimed May 25, 2003, as National Missing Children’s Day.  I encourage you to read the Proclamation in its entirity.

Below is a small portion of the Proclamation.  I have taken the liberty of bolding certain points.

National Missing Children’s Day, 2003
By the President of the United States of America
A Proclamation

“…The Department of Justice estimates that more than 50,000 children will be victims of nonfamily abductions each year. While the rate of recovery in such kidnappings is approximately 99 percent, the trauma of abduction affects far too many. No young person in America should ever know the terror of abduction, and no family should ever have to experience the nightmare of having a loved one suddenly taken.

The safety and well-being of our children is a shared responsibility for all Americans and for Federal, State, and local authorities. My Administration is making the prevention and investigation of child abductions a top priority. We are working to use available resources to educate our citizens about how to prevent child abductions

…Our Nation has come to know the names and faces of far too many children because they have been the victims of acts of cruelty and violence. These crimes break our hearts and stir our anger. Our Nation shares the joy of the parents who are reunited with their children, and prays with those who are still hoping and waiting. We grieve with every family that has suffered the loss of or injury to a child. We will continue the fight against the threats that our children face…

…NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 25, 2003, as National Missing Children’s Day. I call upon Americans to join me in commemorating this observance by celebrating those children who have been returned to their loved ones, remembering those young people who are missing, and continuing to work together on every front to protect our children from those who would seek to harm them…”

My job as a motivational and inspirational speaker/trainer is to transmit my passion for personal safety straight into the hearts of my audiences.  My goal is to change awareness habits right then and there in my safety seminars.  Thereby preventing future abductions and devastating sexual assaults.

I want my children and your children to enjoy their childhoods.   When our children are grown, I hope and pray that they have sweet memories of riding bikes, and playing with their friends.

Please continue teaching your children to be safe in all that they do.  I will also continue teaching my little bike riders to be safe.

To the joys of childhood!
